The Rooster

Grow up in the country, and there’s a good chance you or someone you love will feel the clanky, feathery blow of a rooster attack. In my case, I was staying with some friends at their farm in BC, and was crossing through the pasture when I was jumped from behind. I got away mostly unscathed, except for the damage to my ego (because boy, did I scream). The rooster, on the other hand, having insulted a guest, promptly became soup.
That experience, along with my ever-active imagination led to this song, which I hope you’ll
enjoy.
I am privileged to have some amazingly talented friends and acquaintances, some of whom
helped fill this track with bluegrassy magic. Wayne Feguson’s fiddle playing plays a starring role
here – it was such a treat to listen in on his session. Rob Currie, who masterfully produced the
recording, also played lead guitar. Of course, Andrew Currie’s drumming steadied the heartbeat
of this frenzied track. And somehow — through Rob’s coercion – John Dymond contributed a
very satisfying bass track to the tune. The Rooster was mastered by Axel Von Hafenbrädl, an
impressive new-on-the-scene mastering engineer who’s been hanging out in Muskoka.
This is the first track I’ve released in quite a long while. I’m building houses for a living lately,
and the days are long and capped with lengthy commutes. I’m also building my own place on
the weekends when life allows. I’m not finding nearly as much time for music as I would like, but
slowly, an album is being recorded. If you do enjoy The Rooster, there will be more where that
came from.
Thank you for listening! Stay safe out there. — Bet
